‘One nation, one election’ has been billed as a major generational reform by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was mooted first in Modi 1.0. By ONOE is meant a simultaneous conduct of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
The concerned Bill, once placed in the Parliament, needs to be amended by both houses. It will require a Constitutional Amendment passed by the Parliament.
The urban body and panchayat polls will be held within 100 days, if the Bill gets passed. Besides Parliament, the Bill must also be passed by all States and Union Territories for this particular clause to kick in.
Political opposition expected:
The ONOE proposal will most likely be opposed by most of the Opposition parties. The INDIA bloc is expected to speak out against it on the floor of Parliament. Just the Lok Sabha elections this year took multiple phases, spanning almost two months. Imagine the time that will take if Assembly elections, too, are held simultaneously for 29 States.
Regional parties to benefit more:
Who will benefit more if ONOE becomes a reality? Political commentators say that elections will become multi-issue ones and more localized, benefitting regional parties more than the BJP and perhaps the Congress, too. Unless a national party manages to make the election everything about its ideology/leadership, it will suffer a backslide, analysts say.
