A view held by experts in the film industry is that ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is not an optimal hit. It may gross Rs 1,000 Cr, but its potential was beyond.
Bunny Vas, who is producing big movies such as ‘Thandel’ these days, is of the opinion that the Prabhas-starrer has failed to realize its fullest potential because about 30% of its potential audience are waiting out. “They are waiting for the movie’s OTT release and are postponing their gratification. Had ‘Kalki’ been released before the pandemic, we would have seen double the collections (in Telugu) because the audience wouldn’t have waited for OTT release,” Bunny Vas said.
He added that when ‘Baahubali 2’ and a few other biggies were released before the pandemic, theatres used to run to packed houses for weeks on end. “It would be so hard for other films to find theatres for a period of three weeks,” Bunny Vas said.
