After so much speculation, India’s official entry has been finalised. The selection committee, Film Federation of India (FFI), situated at Chennai has finalised Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies as contender for India’s official entry
“It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year — who are equally worthy contenders for this honour.”, wrote Kiran Rao in her social media post.
Film Critic Baradwaj Rngan called it a perfect choice. He wrote, “Submitting a film for the Oscars is not just about the film being good but also whether the producers have the funds / desire / know-how / contacts to mount the hugely expensive Oscar campaign.”
After winning the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival, film enthusiasts hoped Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagined as Light would be India’s entry for Oscars. It had received good reviews across the film festivals held in San Sebastian, Toronto and New York.
