Every Dasara Release Resulted with Disappointment; Why the Filmmakers are Missing Out the Long-weekends?

The Dasara, Sankranti, Summer are the standard time to release big movies and small movies in big numbers. However, the seasonal time for theatres has been following the trend, this Dasara’s cinemas season disappointed the moviegoers. Let us see how the recent Dasara releases have fared, both in collections wise and how they were received. 

What are the Major Dasara Releases? 

1. Viswam
2. Vettaiyan – The Hunter (2024)
3. Maa Nanna Super Hero
4. Janaka Aithe Ganaka
5. Jigra
6. Martin 

Out of these five movies, which one ignited most interest in you to spend at the least Rs. 200 buck in theatres? None? I don’t blame you. Every movie I mentioned above had the reception below what the makers had expected, especially Viswam and Martin.

Gopi Chand starrer Viswam was promoted as the comeback film of OG Srinu Vaitla. However, the audience were very quick to disregard anything that is par with mediocrity and the same happened with Martin too. The makers were also too confident about the film that they even wanted to release the film in more than 10 languages including Korean, Japanese etc. However, the movie bombed at the theatres with alleged issues from distributors as well as audience’s reception.

Super Star Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan – The Hunter (2024) had the least hype around it. Even the Manasilayo foot-tapping worthy song from Anirudh’s library of mass songs didn’t attracted the needed hype for a Rajinikath’s cinema. However, the reception of Vettaiyan is mixed. A few audiences were surprised to see the subtle Gnanavel’s social commentary but many were disappointed to see the mishandling of Rajinified action scenes from the same Gnanavel. The mix of serious social commentary and mass masala commercial cinema seems to have created this mismatch and the eventual mixed talk for the film. 

Maa Nanna Super Hero and Janaka Aithe Ganaka were supposed to be the sleeper hits of Dasara– just like 35 Chinna Katha Kadu and Aay in the second week of August. But, both Sudheer Babu’s feature and Suhas’s movie disappeared into oblivion without a trace. Sudheer Babu’s MNSP collected just above Rs. 35 Lakhs on its release day. Janaka Aithe Ganaka had collected Rs. 60 Lakhs on its release day, according to Sacnilk.

Alia Bhatt starrer Jigra can be declared as the overall winner. But, its performance at box office is the least to categorise it as a winner of any kind. On its Day-1, Jigra collected just Rs. 4 Crores making it the weakest day-1 opening of Alia Bhatt in the last decade. But, Jigra was praised for hatt’s performance and Vasan Bala’s emotional pull of brother and sister bond. 

The recent long weekend we saw was August 15, Independence Day. It saw a whopping more than seven releases in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil language. It had the huge potential to do wonders at the box office. Out of all, only Thangalan and Stree 2 remained blockbusters and Aay also minted reasonably good numbers for its budget. 

The filmmakers have been missing the major days of releases disastrously. We have seen none of the major releases this summer also citing the reasons of elections and IPL as reasons. However, it is high time to re-think about the priorities of placing the movies at big holidays.
