Betavolt, a Chinese startup, asserts the creation of a revolutionary battery capable of powering smartphones for an impressive 50 years without charging. Termed the world’s first miniaturized atomic energy system, this nuclear battery employs 63 isotopes in a module smaller than a coin. By converting energy released from decaying isotopes into electricity, Betavolt aims to revolutionize multiple sectors, including aerospace, AI, medical equipment, microprocessors, sensors, drones, and micro-robots.
Betavolt’s initial nuclear battery delivers 100 microwatts, with a voltage of 3V, and measures a mere 15x15x5 cubic millimeters. Safety measures are in place, preventing fire or explosions under sudden force, and the battery can operate in a wide temperature range from -60 to 120 degrees Celsius. Using nickel-63 as a radioactive energy source and diamond semiconductors to convert energy, Betavolt ensures safety and claims no external radiation, making it suitable for medical devices within the human body.
Despite concerns about radiation, Betavolt assures users that their battery is secure, transforming into a stable, non-radioactive isotope of copper after the decay period. This breakthrough battery technology is set to transform the electronics industry, offering an unlimited power supply and eliminating the need for chargers or portable power banks. The potential applications are vast, from continuous drone flight to phones that never need charging, presenting a promising future for the use of electronic devices.
