The Andhra Pradesh police have launched an active search for controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) in connection with a case involving objectionable social media posts. Officers visited his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, on Monday to serve him a notice but found him absent. Varma’s phone was switched off, and reports indicate he has been untraceable since the start of the week. This has raised suspicions that he might be avoiding arrest.
Despite his absence, Varma’s legal team has assured the police of his willingness to cooperate through digital means. His lawyers stated that he missed earlier summons due to a pre-scheduled film shoot and requested more time to respond.
Allegations Against Ram Gopal Varma
The case against Varma stems from his social media posts allegedly targeting former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and his daughter-in-law Brahmani. Citizens found these posts offensive, leading to a complaint being filed in Maddipadu, Prakasam district.
Controversy During Film Promotions
The controversy began during the promotions of Varma’s political drama Vyuham. His posts reportedly contained derogatory remarks about Naidu and his family. Critics have accused Varma of deliberately using provocative statements to promote his film, which was released when the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) was in power. The posts have triggered multiple complaints across Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the current legal action.
Police Unable to Find RGV
Attempts to serve Varma a notice at his residence have failed, fueling concerns about his non-cooperation. Reports suggest that his unavailability could be a deliberate attempt to avoid facing the police.
High Court Rejects RGV’s Plea
To avoid arrest, Varma approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking protection. However, the court rejected his plea, instructing him to either appear before the authorities or seek additional time through proper legal channels. This decision leaves Varma with no option but to respond to the summons directly.
