‘Meiyazhagan’ (Tamil) and its Telugu-dubbed version, ‘Sathyam Sundaram’, have received a mixed response on OTT. Although most have loved the Karthi-Arvind Swamy movie, some feel that it’s absolutely slow.

Slow-burn movies are best-watched at a stretch so that you get into the groove. You have to be in sync with the film’s mood and the characters’ journey. For this, you have to watch them uninterrupted. On OTT, though, people are tempted to fast-forward because they look for plot points.

Of course, you could contradict this take. OTT viewers are used to watching 8-hour-long series, some of which are dead slow in their pacing. So, why should a slow movie be a problem? Perhaps, the mindset is different when you are watching a movie?

Meanwhile, Tamil audiences are disappointed that the OTT version is 18 minutes shorter. A stretch involving the Jallikattu episode has been done away with. “It’s sad that they chopped off 18 minutes of ‘Meiyazhagan’ but think of those who were lucky enough to watch the full version. If you did, you’re one of the few thousands to have seen it. It’s unlikely anyone in the future will see what you did and it’s next to impossible that they’d see it on a big screen,” wrote film critic Vishal Menon. For the Telugu audience, though, this is not an issue at all. If anything, it is a plus.
