Dr. Prabhakar Jaini shed light on the challenges faced in the Telugu cinema industry, emphasizing the difficulty of marketing good and small films compared to less substantial productions. He highlighted the lack of support from both promoters and governmental bodies, lamenting the absence of assistance for films like “Kaloji,” which received no subsidy, entertainment tax concession, or an audience with government officials.
Addressing the financial constraints faced after completing “Prajakavi Kaloji,” Dr. Jaini discussed the hurdles in advertising, securing theaters, and overall production costs. He pointed out the industry’s inclination towards commercial elements like fights and item songs, which were not congruent with the film’s theme centered around Kaloji. Despite the challenges, the film’s lead actor received the National Best Actor Award.
Dr. Jaini expressed disappointment with the current state of Telugu cinema awards, stating that small, high-quality films struggle to secure recognition, even with knowledgeable juries. He urged for a shift in audience preference toward meaningful cinema and advocated for government incentives for good films, similar to those in other languages.
